Rules for purchase of quotas

Denmark

EU or EEC citizens can buy 100 % of Danish fishing companies on the condition that they are either fishermen or fishing companies and that they are residing in Denmark. If they are not fishermen or not residing in Denmark, they can own 1/3 of a vessel/a quota.

Other relevant rules:
One pelagic vessel can have max. 10 % of the Danish herring- (NVG/North Sea/Skagerak) and mackerel quota on one vessel. One is free to buy additional: sprat quota/sandeel quota, Baltic Sea sprat and Norway pout.

One shipowner can own a maximum of 4 vessels with a total GT of 5,000. 

 

Norway

To own a fishing company 100% one must be a fisherman and be registered on "sheet B".

Others than fishermen can own 33%.

In the field of pelagics, a shipowner can own a maximum of 5% of the total quota.

In the field of factory trawlers one shipowner can own a maximum of 2 vessels with a maximum of 3 quotas on each.

In the field of coast purse seiners one shipowner can own a maximum of 2 vessels/fishing companies.

In the field of cod fishery a shipowner can own a maximum of 2 trawlers with a maximum of 3 quotas.

 

The Faroe Islands

Foreign shipowners can own up to 1/3 of a fishing company.

EU/EEC-citizens can only own 100% if they live on the Faroe Islands and have lived there for 2 years. 

 

Iceland

- Foreign owners can own up to 49% of a company

- EU/EEC-citizens can own 100% if they settle in Denmark

 

Greenland

1/3 ownership can be allowed for non-Greenlandic fishermen.

If an EEC citizen resides in Greenland, he can own a fishing company 100%, if he is a fisherman.

 

Scotland

EU/EEC citizens can own 100% of a fishing company without living in the country.

 

Spain

A foreign owner can purchase the 100 per cent of one Spanish Shipowning company and catch with the owned vessels the allocated quota. The vessel should be purchased through a Spanish company.

One foreign vessel can not catch one Spanish quota allocated to one Spanish vessel.

 

Portugal

A foreign owner can purchase the 100 per cent of one Portuguese Shipowning company and catch with the owned vessels the allocated quota. The vessel should be purchased through a Portuguese company.

One foreign vessel can not catch one Portuguese quota allocated to one Portuguese vessel.
